Art stars speak

PAINTERS PAINTING (Emile de Antonio, 1972) Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

Here’s a film that strays somewhat from the director’s usual political documentaries. It’s a series of interviews and studio visits with key figures in the New York art scene from 1950 to 1970, including Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and Frank Stella, who could be Woody Allen’s lost twin brother. It’s a fascinating document of a very specific moment in the American art movement, its market and scene, boasting not just the media-obsessive Warhol but the self-conscious star presence of Rauschenberg. And, given the way American art has evolved since this film was made, it’s very possible that de Antonio managed to capture the last generation of great American painters. (January 8, Bloor)
