CAMP SIS BLACK HISTORY MONTH FILM NITE presents six films and videos by black and queer black women. The quality runs the gamut from the sweet student film Confronting Your Fears, by Ryerson’s Brandi Costain, in which two black teens hit Canada’s Wonderland for some fun, to Jennifer Holness’s insightful NFB documentary Speakers For The Dead, which focuses on a small Ontario farming town intent on denying its black heritage. Michelle Mohabeer’s poetic Tracing Soul looks at queer sexuality through images of female bodies in natural landscapes, while filmmaker Dawn Wilkinson questions what it means to be a black Canadian in her revealing Dandelions. There are two short pieces, Jackie Rose’s imagistic Regent Park and Faith Nolan’s and Julia Sudbury’s Critical Resistance: Within These Cages, which takes us inside San Francisco’s county jail, where Nolan and Sudbury conduct a music program for female inmates.
