Life can be a high-drama sandbox for the city's film and video artists - snitches and bullies, sensitive crybabies and never enough toys. But some youngsters still shine. A report card follows.
DAVID CRONENBERG Plays well with others. With A History Of Violence , David led his teammates Viggo, Ed, Maria and William to some of their best work. But why so serious?
DEEPA MEHTA Deepa grasps difficult subjects well and communicates in vivid pictures. Water showed exceptional improvement and admirable determination to finish a project once thwarted by bullies. Assignment was not completed in English, but never mind.
TONY CIANCIOTTA Tony was both enterprising and generous this year. His Capri Releasing presented outstanding films like Tarnation , Nobody Knows and Darwin's Nightmare . He also forged a wonderful cross-cultural alliance with the Al Green Theatre at the Jewish Community Centre.
ELLEN PAGE Precocious to a fault, Ellen continued to seek out older playmates this year. She found a powerful outlet for her feelings in Mouth To Mouth , which she filmed in Europe. Have alerted guidance counsellor.
HUBERT DAVIS Hubert continues to amass gold stars. His Academy Award nomination early in the year for his short film Hardwood was matched by news that his new film, Aruba , has been invited to Mr. Redford's Sundance Film Festival. Most likely to succeed?
ATOM EGOYAN "Teacher's pet" is such an ugly phrase, and Atom has laboured under alternating praise and criticism. As if to address his fans and foes, he released both Where The Truth Lies and his video diary, Citadel ,this year. One of them stands with his very best work.
ROBERT LEE Robert excels at cut-and-paste. His videotape Minima Moralia juxtaposes movie images with his own, and includes a mesmerizing reflection on Arsinée Khanjian . His sense of humour is certainly unique, which is perhaps not the best thing in a sense of humour.
TRACY WRIGHT Tracy often hides her light under a bushel, so it took an American named Miranda July to show her off in Me And You And Everyone We Know . She was brilliant and an inspiration to some of our shyer folk.
JENNIFER MATOTEK Jennifer needs to curb her potty mouth, though she did make a lovely videotape this year called Every Boy I’ve Fucked. Her inventory was clever, funny and as dry as bad sex.
