Digital Gun Awards 2004 Toronto Online Film Festival Rating: NNN
This is film festival as sack race. Participants get a theme, 48 hours to come up with a story, 12 hours to shoot and 20 hours to edit a six-minute film. The results are screened and ranked by the audience and a panel of judges. The theme this year is Bedroom Tales, and the films tend to be pedestrian. There are a few exceptions both very good and very bad. I really like the minimalist thriller Goodnight, Hank and the surprisingly tender and resonant Virus Room. But really, this is a sport, and the audience’s function is less to be entertained by the films per se than to marvel at the filmmakers’ feats of speed and cunning. That a couple of the films also work as art is a bonus. (April 8, Regent)
