Finding Truelove

FINDING TRUELOVE (Sam Kuhn, USA). 68 minutes. Rating: NN

A refreshing DIY spirit informs this shaggy documentary about a group of 20-somethings from Portland who find a California high school yearbook in a Value Village, become obsessed with some of its students and then decide to drive down and crash the school’s upcoming 20th reunion.

There’s some tension around whether they’ll discover what became of the popular kid, the cool alternative chick and the eponymous Timothy Truelove, a wavy-haired dreamboat who seems to have had it all – judgments based, of course, solely on yearbook photos.

While the retro 80s soundtrack adds lots of fun, it’s a shame the Portlanders never come into focus. And there’s a smug, sophomoric feel to the project, with some self-indulgent sequences simply padding the doc out to feature length.
