Giants do the alt thing

Rating: NNNN

GIGANTIC (A TALE OF TWO JOHNS)

D: A.J. Schnack

Rating: NNNN

This is a highly entertaining and informative profile of They Might Be Giants, which is either the best band ever named after a cult movie or too preciously quirky for words, depending on how you hear the group now best known for the memorable theme for Malcolm In The Middle, You’re Not The Boss Of Me. Director A.J. Schnack has culled performance footage, tons of interviews, drop-ins from TMBG fans like Michael McKean and Harry Shearer (no surprise that two members of Spinal Tap and “humourist” Sarah Vowell are big fans of this group) as well as video clips and a couple of well-chosen TV appearances to create a portrait of an outfit that knows how “alt” it is, but just can’t help itself.

Unusually well made for the genre. (Paradise, October 3-5 Royal, October 6-7 Music Hall, October 8-9).
