Horror fans: you’ve got to see one of these flicks this weekend

Horror does really well in the summer. I think it’s because the heat has a way of wearing you down into a more suggestible state. So if you’ve already seen The Shallows and are looking for something else to shake you up, well, Little Italy has some options.

Tonight (Friday July 8), for instance, The Royal is hosting a special screening of The Interior to give Toronto audiences a chance to catch Trevor Juras’s odd, unsettling feature debut on the big screen before it goes to VOD and disc later this month.

I saw The Interior last fall at the Toronto After Dark film festival, where I was impressed with its singular weirdness: it’s an interesting blend of white-collar comedy and wilderness horror, following a young office worker (Patrick McFadden) who leaves his dull life behind for the forests of British Columbia, only to slip into an increasingly nightmarish fugue state.

It’s not entirely successful –Juras doesn’t get the balance of comic and creepy quite right – but when the movie tips into genuine horror, it works really, really well. And it’ll work a lot better on a big screen than it will on a smaller one, so if you’re even the littlest bit curious you should drop by The Royal tonight at 9 pm.

And come back to down on Monday (July 11), when NOW will host this month’s Free Flick Monday screening at The Royal: I Know What You Did Last Summer, the 1997 slasher picture where Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr. and future Cruel Intentions stars Ryan Philippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar get chased around by a creepy fisherman who, well, knows what they did last summer.

I can’t be there myself this month thanks to a scheduling conflict, but you know the drill: doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm. The first 100 guests get free popcorn, everybody gets a free movie. What are you waiting for, huh? Come on down!
