York University graduate student Yuval Sagiv’s deconstruction of the 1916 British war document The Battle Of The Somme – shot by cameraman Geoffrey H. Malins, whose memoir provides both the title of Sagiv’s film and most of its onscreen text – is rigorously constructed and formally thrilling.

Audiences hoping for a rousing examination of wartime filmmaking will probably be disappointed by the unapologetically detached and cerebral approach, but those willing to submit to Sagiv’s method will find How I Filmed The War utterly compelling.
