Indian Gem

Rating: NNNNN

MONSOON WEDDING (Mira Nair) Rating: NNNN

Director Mira Nair went home to India and called on family and friends to help her make her best film to date. Monsoon Wedding focuses on the tribulations of a middle-class Indian family hosting the wedding of their daughter Aditi (Vasundhara Das), who has agreed to an arranged marriage even though she’s in love with her boss.

A clutch of sisters, cousins, brothers and paid help also sort out their personal lives during this joyous Punjabi celebration. Nair captures the tensions facing today’s Indians, who want to maintain their culture while embracing a modern, technologically savvy world. She also shows us a hell of a good time by including boisterous Bollyw00d-style musical numbers that show off her good-looking and talented cast. (July 12-16, Revue July 17, Kingsway)
