The Mirkopoulos family

You’ve heard of all the big names, whether family (Thomson, Koffler, Frum) or corporate (ScotiaBank is so all over everything), but we’re giving props to a family that does its thing in quieter ways.

The Mirkopoulos clan runs Cinespace Film Studios, which specializes in the development, management and operation of studio space and support facilities for the film and television industry. But it’s their support of the three year-old CineSiege Film Awards that’s got our interest.

The awards are presented each year to films completed by York University students. The Mikopouloses fund the jury dinner, the film copies, the Bar Italia freight for the reception and food, the after-party and rent for the Royal, where the films screen as part of a special event called CineSiege. The whole experience gives these budding filmmakers their first sweet taste of success.

But even sweeter – they don’t call them the Mirkopoulos Awards.
