Marvel in a mask

The Parkdale Wrestler (Stacey Case)

Insomniac Press spices up the launch of two new books with a screening of Stacey Case’s delightfully homemade Super-8 wrestling cycle, which could do more to inspire independent short film production than any number of federal cultural development initiatives. The films follow íArriba! the Parkdale Wrestler (a guy in a Mexican wrestling mask) eating, walking around and smashing things with chairs, all to a blistering surf rock soundtrack. With their hilariously low-tech special effects and over-the-top wrestling sequences, they look like the sort of thing you could make yourself on the weekends. At the same time, they’re gleefully entertaining, the way Laurel and Hardy movies were when you were five. Rumour has it that this screening may feature never-before-seen Parkdale Wrestler footage, including the unspecified “craziest thing anybody’s ever seen.” The mind boggles. (May 5, the Rivoli)
