Masala! Mehndi! Masti!

MASALA! MEHNDI! MASTI! (July 24 to 26)

Toronto’s largest South Asian festival returns for its ninth year, and the film component offers an eclectic range of free programming. So when you’ve had enough sun, duck into the Queen Elizabeth Theatre and catch a movie – assuming you can get there before all the seats are taken.

The centerpiece of the MMMovies! series is a spotlight on Lisa Ray. Two of the actor’s collaborations with director Deepa Mehta screen Saturday (July 25): the Oscar-nominated Water at 4:30 pm, Bollywood/Hollywood at 8:30 pm.

Ray is scheduled to appear for Q&As after both films, but if you’re really keen to hear her speak, come back to the Queen Elizabeth Sunday (July 26) at 3 pm, when she’ll sit down for an hour-long conversation with Mohit Rajhans to discuss her films and take questions from the audience.

Other offerings in the film series include a singalong screening of the Bollywood musical Jab We Met, Saturday at 1 pm, and an assortment of short films at 7:15 pm. And on Sunday, the new documentary Chillin’ In Your Brown Skin Part 2: Brown Like Me screens at 1:30 pm, followed by a short discussion.

Friday to Sunday (July 24-26) at Exhibition Place.
