I will not go to a major studio movie that opens the first two weeks in January or the last two weeks of August and then complain that it was bad. If it were good, it wouldn't open in the first two weeks of January or the last two weeks of August. Or Labour Day weekend, come to think of it.
I will not complain that independent distributors don't do enough to promote independent and foreign films - especially when I wait for the DVD rather than pay to see independent and foreign films in the cinemas. Of course, when the local indies grab a screen just two weeks before the film comes out on DVD, I'm pretty much justified.
I will not complain that the majors do too much to promote brain-dead summer event movies. I got all peeved after seeing disappointments like Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life, The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle on opening night. And I will not go to sequels of movies I didn't like in the first place just because Sony/ Viacom/Vivendi has dropped $30 million on prints and pub. I won't waste my time on the DVD either.
I will make a concerted effort to actually support independent films, local filmmakers, independent video stores and repertory cinemas rather than just paying lip service to them during the film festival.
I will not go to horror movies for the dialogue, kung fu movies for the acting, Iranian films for the action scenes or documentaries for the cinematography.
I will not get emotionally invested in the Academy Awards, which are, after all, just prizes given by a trade association.
I will stop being surprised when a scene or shot from the trailer doesn't appear in the finished film. This happens all the time. I will get over it.
I will not attend movies starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and complain about the stupidity of the script. Or Gooding's inability to play comedy. Those are givens.
I will not attend movies directed by Simon West, Michael Bay or Dominic Sena and expect narrative logic or spatial coherence.
I will learn to tell the difference between Aaron Eckhart and Thomas Jane.
I will stop complaining that Ben Affleck/Colin Farrell/Lucy Liu doesn't deserve to be a star. The last thing any of us really wants is that everybody should get what they deserve. I will continue to wonder why Paul Walker doesn't have a job that includes asking people, "Would you like fries with that?"
I will mark the following dates on my calendar: January 15 (Sundance begins); February 20 (Kill Bill: Vol. 2 opens); March 19 (Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind hits screens); April 15 (Images Festival begins); May 12 (Cannes gets going).
