Opening the mind

RENDEZVOUS WITH MADNESS FILM FESTIVAL Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

Every film worth watching opens fissures in the mind, which should have made Rendezvous With Madness unnecessary. But 12 years on, it’s become an essential gaze into the crack’d mirror. Among this year’s 38 films, there’s a focus on the particular mental landscapes of artists.

The festival opens with Chris Landreth’s outstanding animated short, Ryan, a portrait of former animator and present street person Ryan Larkin. That’s paired with In The Realms Of The Unreal, Jessica Yu’s look at janitor and famed outsider artist Henry Darger (today, Thursday, November 11). Later in the week, artist John Cadigan screens People Say I’m Crazy, billed as the first documentary directed by a filmmaker with schizophrenia (November 18), and this year’s breakout therapy metal flick, Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster (November 19).
