catherine breillat's fat girl should not be banned by the Ontario Film Review Board -- it should be treated as an educational film. Parents should be taking their teenage daughters by the hand to watch this movie, but instead, it's gathering dust and unprecedented notoriety. According to the board, one 15-minute scene violates board standards because it depicts someone under-age in a sexual situation -- 20ish Fernando (Libero de Rienzo) seduces 15-year-old virgin Elena (played by the over-16 Roxane Mesquida).
Fernando and Elena are in bed. She's naked, he's wearing a shirt but no pants (we see his erect penis for a few seconds). In a bed a few feet away, Elena's 12-year-old sister, Anaïs, pretends to be asleep.
Fernando wants to fuck Elena, but she's afraid; he cajoles, pleads, lies and avows his love for the girl, who's trying to hold her own. She finally agrees to have anal sex with him because he's convinced her she won't really be giving up her virginity.
It's an emotionally devastating scene, especially for the many women in the audience who will be reminded of their own first sexual experience. This film, without showing any explicit act, captures the uncomfortableness, shame and disappointment of a first sexual encounter.
But the Film Review Board has banned it. Oh, OK -- it's acceptable for Hollywood films to show us anorexic teenage girls writhing and preening for boys who treat girls like shit. Somehow that's all right, because the girls are painted as nymphomaniacs.
From comedies like American Pie to dramas Like American Beauty, male writers invent sexually voracious virgins who are dying for action, so of course the men are justified in sticking it to them.
Watching Hollywood films, you'd think everyone is a great kisser, sex on a kitchen table is comfortable, you and your partner will have telepathic powers (you'll never have to say anything like "A little to the left, honey") and, natch, you'll both come at the same time.
It's this kind of movie fantasy that has destroyed many people's expectations of sex.
Finally, Fat Girl has dared to show the truth, and the Ontario government thinks we'll be offended.
I want to scream.
