DANIEL COCKBURN AND MIRHA-SOLEIL ROSS

Rating: NNN

Animal liberation activist and creator of the Counting Past Two transgender film festival Mirha-Soleil Ross continues to carve out her own busy intersections within the art world. Recently she launched a pregnancy project that saw her dress up as knocked-up for nine months, sparking debates about reproductive technologies. Daniel Cockburn is the city’s best new video artist, turning out conceptual pieces that start sly and get knottier as they go.

In a brilliant stroke, curator and art scene provocateur Louise Bak brings Ross and Cockburn together for a screening that shows how personal obsession and formal compulsion can produce rich work. Cockburn’s rigorous Metronome is a little masterpiece about identity through math. Ross’s Allo Performance! shows her “pregnant” and frolicking under the Golden Gate Bridge as her mother spins hilarious horror stories of motherhood.
