Portrait Of A Man

PORTRAIT OF A MAN (Visa Koiso-Kanttila, Finland). 81 minutes. Subtitled. Thursday (May 6), 2 pm, Innis Town Hall. Rating: NNNN

Visa Koiso-Kanttila completes his “manhood trilogy,” begun in Father To Son and continued in A Winter’s Journey, with this study of Kalle, a troubled Finnish man. Now the same age his father was when he killed himself, Kalle tries to deal with his consid erable mid-life issues by examining his family history and confronting the specifics of his father’s suicide.

This is heavy stuff – Kalle’s telephone conversations with his own increasingly concerned son are almost too painful to watch – but Koiso-Kanttila doesn’t exploit his subject. Instead, he maintains a respectful distance while accompanying Kalle on his journey. You can’t help but be drawn along with him.[rssbreak]
