Rebelfest International Independent Film Festival To September 11, Innis Town Hall. Rating: NN Rating: NN
A new festival curated by filmmakers showcasing independent films from around the world is an excellent idea, but a limited sampling of the films on offer turns up little to get excited about.
In Zerophilia (September 9, 6 pm), a shy boy grows breasts whenever he makes out with his classy new girlfriend. Avant Qu'il Ne Soit Trop Tard (Couples, September 8, 6 pm) is like The Big Chill, only with French people in a chalet, and the suicidal character shows up in a raccoon suit. And I Will Avenge You Iago! (September 10, 6:30 pm) is about ACTORS! And ACTING! And LOVE! Life is too short.
L.A. Dicks (Dean Alioto, September 10, 9 pm) may be the most watchable of the lot, in spite of the rather jejune humour of its title. It's the story of two private detectives, one a Sensitive New-Age Guy, the other an asshole, who are trying to get a script deal and blackmail some guy.
It's a little bit funny sometimes, although I suspect they made the receptionist a lesbian so they could get away with making gay jokes about the two main characters.
At least they know they have to try.
