REVISION (Philip Scheffner, Germany). 106 minutes. Subtitled. Rating: NNNN
As if working with an abstract puzzle, Philip Scheffner pieces together the story of two men found shot to death in a German farmer’s field.
Interviews with the victims’ families, witnesses, lawyers and journalists provide fragmented perspectives. Some of these people are ignorant, others clinical. Meanwhile the families are simply kept in the dark.
As the bigger picture comes into focus, what seemed to be random killings become hate crimes fuelled by racism and immigration policy. The film’s clever, conceptual structure may prove an endurance test for some, but patience is richly rewarded.
