Shopping while the TIFF spirit is dropping

The streets of Yorkville were serene on Wednesday morning.

Maybe it was the first chill of fall in the air or just the woman sitting on the steps of Teatro Verde proclaiming, “everyone’s crashing!” but it was pretty clear we had reached the height of TIFF hoopla during Tuesday night’s InStyle party. A week into the film festival, everyone was ready for a nap and you could almost see the ZZZZZZs floating out the windows of the Four Seasons.

Inside that hotel, where George Clooney ran into (literally) so many startled ladies who sip champers and where Oprah more carefully walked the halls, the only sparkle on display was in Swarovski’s jewellery suite.

The Austrian crystal company has been loaning out baubles from its ready-to-wear line and 20th anniversary couture collection throughout the festival. Tilda Swinton visited and Kristin Scott Thomas grabbed the aptly named Starcatcher clutch for her red carpet commitments.

At the Bloor street Swarovski store during the party for Mother and Child, both the film’s Kerry Washington and Canadian model legend Monika Schnarre shopped display cases full of jawbreaker pendants and kaleidoscope cocktail rings for their Monday nights out.

Times must be tough in LA LA land because gift lounges are back in style with the stars. You only have to read the daily press releases about which A-listers visited the IT Lounge (Jennifer Garner, Edward Norton, Ricky Gervais, Jason Bateman and Sissy Spacek), Tastemakers (Ben Barnes, Ally Sheedy and Colin Firth) or received a Bask-It-Style bag (Mary J. Blige, Julianne Moore and Colin Farrell) to sense a renewed interest in conspicuously consuming swag.

Never fear local economy. Some stars have been spotted pulling out their plastic during TIFF too, especially at Holts where Megan Fox and those Jonas brothers all shopped. Milla Jovovich was there too, wandering through the shoe department just as Shinan Govani’s book launch was starting to pack the café on Tuesday evening.[rssbreak]
