Produced by the National Film Board, View From The Summit takes a look at the 2001 Quebec City Summit of the Americas, which saw thousands of protestors confronting armed police while 34 heads of states met behind closed doors to discuss the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) agreement. Seven filmmakers followed various persons from both sides of the fence — protestors willing to incite violence, academics who believe the agreement is just, the head of the police force. It’s a balanced portrait, but you get the sense that the filmmakers didn’t want to offend anyone. This screening is a benefit for the Centre for Social Justice, and there will be a post-screening panel discussion about protest strategies and tactics leading up to the G8 meeting in Alberta this June. Panelists include the CAW’s Carol Phillips, Judy Rebick and lawyer Clayton Ruby. Admission is by donation. (April 16, 7:30 pm, Bloor)
