The Found Footage Festival: Volume Four

THE FOUND FOOTAGE FESTIVAL: VOLUME FOUR Rating: NNNN

In what looks to become a Victoria Day weekend tradition, Joe Pickett and Nick Prueher bring the fourth edition of their Found Footage Festival back to the Bloor Cinema.

It’s another celebration of home-video ephemera, regrettable advertising and inappropriate sexual content – sometimes all in the same clip. Pickett and Prueher scour the trash heaps of America for their material, and come up with some of the strangest stuff you’ll ever see projected on a big screen.

This year’s package includes a flashback to terrible 1980s Saturday-morning cartoons featuring animated versions of M.C. Hammer, Mr. T, Chuck Norris and Rubik The Amazing Cube, and a reel of video-dating testimonials from single men who are likely to remain so.

You’ll also see a selection of terrible erotica – there’s a reason The Secrets Of Sacred Sex didn’t rule the sales charts in 1994 – and a sorrowful selection of heavy-metal instructional videos.

I can’t remember whether the clip from Donna Mills: The Eyes Have It was included in the vintage hair-and-makeup section or packaged with the celebrity vanity videos, but in my defence I had the shakes pretty bad at that point.

This stuff can be volatile. Seriously, when they cue up the penis-pump infomercial, be prepared to duck under your seat. Some sights just aren’t made for human eyes.

Screens Sunday at the Bloor.
