THE FROG PRINCES (Omar Majeed, Ryan Mullins, Canada). 69 minutes. Subtitled. Rating: NNNN
The fable about the frog who’s really royalty takes on new meaning in this funny and moving doc about a Montreal-area school that uses theatre to help build confidence and a sense of accomplishment in developmentally challenged students.
There’s lots of drama about whether the show will go on, what with emotional flare-ups, relationship skirmishes and occasional creative licence taken with the eco-themed script and songs. But the students’ patient and never condescending mentor/director, Dr. Stephen Snow, guides them through to opening night and beyond, and his recitation of Prospero’s speech will, like much of the film, bring honest tears to your eyes.
