Wadim

WADIM (Carsten Rau, Hauke Wendler, Germany). 90 minutes. Subtitled. Rating: NNNNN

This harrowing, intimate tale is a powerful critique of international immigration policies that treat people like unwanted goods.

Wadim was six when his Russian family moved to Germany. Despite the fact that they lived there as temporary aliens – for more than a decade! – Wadim considered Hamburg his home, until he jumped in front of a train at age 23. His final desperate act almost seems to have been his way to ensure he wouldn’t be deported again.

Through talking-head interviews, directors Carsten Rau and Hauke Wendler piece together Wadim’s turbulent life, providing an insightful and heart-wrenching portrait of a young man who had no country to call home.
