XXY (Lucia Puenzo, Argentina/Spain/France). 91 minutes. Subtitles. Sunday (May 25 ), 7:30 pm, Isabel Bader. Rating: NNNN
The Inside Out fest has an unusually strong component of films about teen conflicts. That’s made room for some great performances – Maya Ritter as the angry Finn’s Girl, Deok-??Hwan Ryu as the trans wrestler in Like A Virgin, and here, in XXY, Inés Efron as Alex, the intersex teenager reaching puberty.
Alex’s family can’t decide how to handle the raging hormones or whether Alex must choose a gender. Dad Kraken (Ricardo Darín) has taken the family to the Uruguay seaside and asked a plastic surgeon and his family to visit. When the surgeon’s son (Martín Piroyansky) gets hot for the hermaphrodite, the crisis deepens.
This is a sad story of alienation and frustration that asks pointed questions about the need to be normal. And Efron is astounding as the 15- year- old trying to handle friendship and sexual desire.
