Film about teen Vampires doesn’t suck

Get ready for a major phenomenon. Catherine Hardwicke’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s phenomenally successful teen romance novels is going to be massive.

One question: is there anything in it for those of us over 16?

Answer: sort of. You want to root for the Cullen family of good vampires trying to survive in a rainy small town in Washington. The baddie vampires, led by Cam Gigandet (The O.C.), are really nasty, and the two leads – newcomer Robert Pattinson as the gloomy undead guy and Kristen Stewart (Into The Wild) as the girl who falls for him – have great chemistry.

The film has a tremendous amount of atmosphere thanks to Hardwicke and her background as a production designer. That small town is super-gloomy, and she does develop the appropriate sense of dread.

Essentially, Twilight offers a mere variation on the familiar forbidden love story. As such, though, it definitely does not suck.
