Free Tonight?

I mentioned this in my online column last week, but it bears repeating: Harbourfront Centre’s free summer film screening series kicks off tonight down at the Sirius Satellite Radio Stage, introduced by Erica Ehm and yours truly.

The theme this summer is Retro Reels, reaching back to the 1980s to dig up such questionable cultural artifacts as Pretty In Pink (tonight), Breakin’ (July 15) and Desperately Seeking Susan (July 22). I guess the programmers were unable to secure a print of Electric Dreams.

Things get much more interesting in the second half of the series, which will feature Jonathan Demme’s brilliant Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (July 29), Cameron Crowe’s sweethearted debut Say Anything … (August 5) and the Jim Henson-David Bowie collaboration Labyrinth (August 12).

All shows start at 9 pm I will do my best to find some interesting anecdotes or observations for the introduction. And if all else fails, I’ll make up something that sounds credible – for example, did you know that Robert Downey, Jr. was originally up for the role of Ducky in Pretty In Pink? Because he certainly could have been.
