Gallowwalkers

GALLOWWALKERS (eOne, 2012) D: Andrew Goth, w/ Wesley Snipes, Kevin Howarth. Rating: NN Blu-ray package: NN Rating: NN

If you’re looking for an oddball riff on Once Upon A Time In The West, Gallowwalkers is for you. It has gunmen in blood-red dusters, a handcar in place of a mighty train, Sergio Leone-style giant close-ups and vast, empty landscapes.

Best of all, it has back-from-the-dead bad guys hunting down the lone gunfighter who’s already killed them once. They’re a dandy crew, fond of ripping the faces from settlers and wearing them as their own. They’re at their best when they take over a little town and their leader (Kevin Howarth having big fun) delivers an extended speech at a mass hanging.

Acting here consists of striking iconic poses and delivering pithy one-liners. Star Wesley Snipes does it as well as anyone in the business.

With some okay action and spectacular scenery, Gallowwalkers starts strong, sags in the middle, suffers from some narrative incoherence and comes back for a decent finish.

The movie was shot in Namibia, which has no film industry. That’s about all you’ll learn from brief extras.

EXTRAS On-set interviews. English, French audio. English subtitles.
