What to Watch on Disney+ Canada in July 2021

Including Questlove's Summer Of Soul, Marvel's Black Widow and a Jungle Cruise movie

Our picks for the best new movies and TV shows coming to Disney+ Canada in July 2021.

Summer Of Soul

The Roots main man Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s debut film uncovers never-before-seen footage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival for a doc that finds the perfect equilibrium between stunning performance footage and insightful social analysis. You can tell Thompson is an audio commentary guy – Summer Of Soul mixes deep-dive anecdotes, socio-cultural analysis and emotional first-person interviews to capture a pivotal but unsung moment in Black American music, politics and history while giving thrilling performance footage of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Mahalia Jackson, Sly and the Family Stone (and many others) room to express what words cannot. July 2

Disney Television Animation

Monsters At Work

Ever wonder how the Monsters, Inc. team managed the technological changeover from collecting children’s screams to gathering their laughter? We’re all about to find out in this new weekly series, which follows a new character, Tyler Tuskmon (voiced by Superstore’s Ben Feldman) as he joins the oddballs at the Monsters Incorporated Facilities Team. Mindy Kaling, Lucas Neff, Alanna Ubach and Henry Winkler are part of the ensemble… and yes, Billy Crystal and John Goodman will be returning as original scarers-turned-carers Mike and Sulley. New episodes Wednesdays from July 7

Marvel Studios

Black Widow

Delayed for more than a year due to COVID, the long-awaited solo project for Scarlett Johansson’s Avenger finally arrives as one of Disney’s $34.99 “Premier Access” titles for those of us who can’t find a theatre playing it. Finally, we get to find out how Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz fit into Natasha Romanoff’s history… and what a Marvel movie directed by Australian minimalist Cate Shortland (Lore) and co-written by American indie filmmaker Ned Benson (The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby) actually looks like. July 9 with Premier Access

National Geographic Documentary Films

Playing With Sharks

Sally Aitken’s National Geographic documentary on underwater photographer and documentary filmmaker Valerie Taylor arrives fresh from its screenings at Hot Docs. With her husband Ron, Valerie made history filming great white sharks in the 70s, even shooting the live animal footage for Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. But their work inadvertently helped shape the popular conception of sharks as predators, and Valerie’s spent decades trying to reorient public sentiment as an activist and conservationist. July 23

Walt Disney Pictures

Jungle Cruise

Adventure! Excitement! Another theme-park attraction gets turned into an elaborate river adventure for a generation that’s never seen The African Queen! Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt do the Bogart and Hepburn thing as a rugged riverboat captain and the intrepid intellectual who commissions him for a trip down the Amazon to find a legendary healing tree; naturally, they soon discover the rainforest has peril aplenty. Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons and Paul Giamatti co-star; Jaume Collet-Serra, best known for Liam Neeson thrillers like Non-Stop and The Commuter, directs. July 30 with Premier Access
