Hes Just Not That Into You

HES JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU (Alliance, 2009) D: Ken Kwapis, w/ Jennifer Aniston, Ben Affleck. Rating: N DVD package: NN Rating: N

This movie uses up what little charm it has in the first five minutes with its amusing explanation of why women persist in mistaking men’s bad behaviour for romantic interest: because little boys with a crush act that way, and in adulthood every girl’s best friends perpetuate the myth.

That’s a seriously anti-romantic stance, but the movie flees from it on little chicken legs to embrace the hogwash it sets out to demolish.

Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin) has no luck with her dates and takes advice from Alex (Justin Long), who has it all figured out. Meanwhile, married guy Ben (Bradley Cooper) has become smitten with aspiring singer Anna (Scarlett Johansson), and long-time live-ins Neil and Beth (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston) are breaking up over his refusal to marry her.

It’s all perfectly predictable. You’ll spot Gigi’s surprise love an hour before he’s revealed.

Characters and performances are one-note jobs. Goodwin is perky, Long is cynical and so on. Only Affleck and Aniston have any chemistry together.

The extras consist of five deleted scenes. There should have been more.

EXTRAS Deleted scenes with optional director commentary. Widescreen. English, French audio and subtitles.
