A WOMAN LIKE ME (Alex Sichel, Elizabeth Giamatti, U.S.). 84 minutes. Rating: NNNN
Alex Sichel, a filmmaker with a Buddhist bent, tries to find a way to accept her terminal breast cancer diagnosis in this intelligent, emotionally charged pic.
It succeeds in part due to her strategy of creating an alter ego (Lili Taylor) whose story she can control. She also weaves in the questions that dog documentarians. In one canny sequence, her husband complains because she’s setting up the shot instead of just letting things happen.
But the pic’s main virtue is Sichel herself, who is charismatic, engaging and very smart.
