BREAKING A MONSTER (Luke Meyer, U.S.). 93 minutes. Rating: NNNN

Luke Meyer’s rock doc spends a year following the members of Brooklyn metal combo (and YouTube sensation) Unlocking the Truth as they sign a record deal, start working on their first album and hit the concert circuit. The twist is that Malcolm Brickhouse, Jarad Dawkins and Alec Atkins are all just 13 years old.

The bulk of Breaking A Monster chronicles the efforts of veteran producer Alan Sacks (who discovered the Jonas Brothers) to shape Brickhouse, Dawkins and Atkins into a commercial property, and their reflexive resistance to the machinery of marketing. The kids’ energy and naïveté proves their greatest asset. They have no patience for legal meetings and branding consultations they’d rather be skateboarding or playing Grand Theft Auto.

Meyer leaves it to us to decide whether that makes them more or less worthy of fame.
