SOUTHERN RITES (Gillian Laub, U.S.). 87 minutes. Rating: NNNN

On January 29, 2011, in Montgomery County, Georgia, an elderly white man shot and killed a young black man whom he discovered in his home with his daughter. As Gillian Laub reveals in Southern Rites, the case is a lot more complex than its summary.

Making her first documentary, Laub (who’d first come to Montgomery County in 2009 to photograph its segregated proms for the New York Times Magazine) digs into the divides of south Georgia and finds contradictions everywhere – just not the ones you might expect.

That’s what makes this such a compelling experience, and I wouldn’t dare reveal anything further.
