Gary Numan: Android in La La Land

GARY NUMAN: ANDROID IN LA LA LAND (Steve Reed, Rob Alexander, UK). 85 minutes. Rating: NNNWin tickets to see Gary Numan on May 25th at Opera House here!

Reality TV hasn’t rescued Gary Numan from oblivion as it did with contemporaries Ozzy Ozbourne and Flavor Flav. This doc could remedy that.

The Brit-pop musician famous for pioneering electronic music three decades ago with Are “Friends” Electric? and Cars makes the move to L.A. from the English countryside to make his comeback album, Splinter.

His creative process doesn’t conjure much excitement in a film clearly engineered to be a promotional tool. Instead, Numan charms at the homestead. He’s an awkward sort, diagnosed with Asperger’s, who credits wife Gemma with holding things together and being the sparkplug in his life. Their relationship is endearing. The music just gets in the way.
