GIRLS DON’T FLY (Monika Grassl, Germany/Austria). 89 minutes. Rating: NNN
In Ghana, young women attend the Aviation and Technology Academy, where they hope to learn how to fly.
Determined to escape traditional roles, they have to cope with their British male instructor, a bully who acts like a colonialist, consistently undermining their self-esteem.
It’s fascinating to watch the young girls yearning to meet their personal goals while coming to political awareness. Just watch them ask why he insists on referring to them by number rather than by name.
