No Man Is An Island

NO MAN IS AN ISLAND (Tim De Keersmaecker, Belgium). 70 minutes. Rating: NN

For migrants from Africa, Lampedusa is a gateway to Europe. The Italian island nestled in the Mediterranean can look like paradise until you wander into a graveyard of shipwrecked boats that once held refugee cargo.

Director Tim De Keersmaecker makes these images pop, but he struggles with the sociopolitical argument he really wants to make. The film follows two young refugees who have been welcomed into the homes of separate families. One barely has a moment to start a new life because his hosts found a new way to make slavery seem like charity, while the other has it really nice.

You feel for both guys, lonely for different reasons, but their stories don’t come together.
