THE PRISON IN TWELVE LANDSCAPES (Brett Story, Canada/US). 87 minutes. Rating: NNNN

Brett Story’s The Prison In Twelve Landscapes serves as the midpoint between Matt Gallagher’s How To Prepare For Prison and Craig Atkinson’s Do Not Resist. It explores the American prison system from a dozen different perspectives, each illustrating or illuminating a new angle on the modern penitentiary.

There’s a fascinating segment about the items approved for sale in prison tuck shops: because CDs become edged weapons when broken, Universal Music manufactures cassette tapes of their best-selling albums specifically for the prison market.

Through subtle choices – whose stories she chooses to follow, which archival footage she chooses to show – director Brett Story also points out the systemic racism that runs through the American justice system. It’s always been there, but now they’ve perfected it.
