Hot Docs’s spotlight this year is on Rosie Dransfield, whose cinema vérité strategies take audiences deep inside unusual worlds – in this case, those of street sex workers in Edmonton.
Letting her camera do the talking, Dransfield tracks Courtney, who’s trying to leave the life, meth addict Shelly, perpetually bruised Nancy, as well as the police task force Project Cares, whose mandate is to keep the women safe.
In one key moment, an officer attempting to give out condoms brings a sex worker to tears – his presence has driven away one of her clients.
