Hot Summer Guide: The Best July Movies

Ghostbusters (July 15)

After a year of non-stop online whining about its gender-swapped casting, can Paul Feig‘s reboot of the beloved 80s effects comedy – now starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, with Chris Hemsworth as their hunky office administrator – stand on its own? Well, the last time Wiig, McCarthy and Feig worked together we got Bridesmaids, which did pretty nicely for itself. Opens July 15

Hitchcock/Truffaut: Magnificent Obsessions

Kent Jones‘s 2015 documentary about the week-long interview session between filmmakers François Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock – which led to a book that became a holy text for a generation of movie brats – planted the seed for TIFF’s summer salute to the two directors. Jones will be at the Lightbox to kick off the series, introducing Day For Night (July 8), I Confess (July 10) and his own doc (July 9), but you’ll want to come back throughout the summer for Hitchcock’s personal favourite Shadow Of A Doubt (July 30) and Truffaut’s rarely-seen historical drama The Story Of Adele H. (August 21). July 7 to September 4

One-off screenings!

Some movies just play better with an audience. Actually, that’s true for virtually every movie, but we know how hard it is to drag you away from Netflix. But you just won’t get as much out of the spectacle of Julie Andrews playing a woman playing a man playing a woman in Blake Edwards‘s Victor/Victoria if you watch it alone instead of catching it when it screens in the Royal’s Musicale! series (July 3). Same goes for the crackling energy of Michael Winterbottom‘s magnificent Madchester docudrama 24 Hour Party People, screening at the newly rebranded Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema (ugh) July 23 in its This Film Should Be Played Loud series. And we’re pretty sure the 90s slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer will be a lot more fun as this month’s NOW Free Flick Monday at the Royal (July 11) than it will be in your living room.
