John Dies At The End

JOHN DIES AT THE END (Anchor Bay, 2012) D: Don Coscarelli, w/ Paul Giamatti, Chase Williamson. Rating: NNN Blu-ray and DVD package: not available Rating: NNN

If you loved Todd And The Book Of Pure Evil, you’ll rejoice at John Dies At The End.

It has the same cheerfully berserk attitude toward its idiots-save-the-world story and a fine collection of wacko monsters.

Dave and John (Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes), a pair of 20ish slackers, ingest a new drug called soy sauce that makes them part of a gateway for something nasty trying to invade our universe.

There’s a creature self-assembled from frozen meats, a murderous moustache, various spider, slug and flying worm things, a talking dog who steals a car, and more.

It’s all very funny, and made more so by Williamson and Mayes’s mostly un-panicked reactions.

I saw JDatTE at a promotional screening, so I can’t comment on the extras except to note that director Don Coscarelli handles himself well in a Q&A session with the audience, but distributor Anchor Bay promises a commentary with Coscarelli, Williamson and Mayes, a Paul Giamatti interview, a making-of doc, an effects doc and more.

Looks like a good package.

EXTRAS Commentary, making-of doc, effects doc, Giamatti interview, more. English audio. Other audio and subtitles tbd.
