LETS MAKE MONEY (Mongrel, 2008) D: Erwin Wagenhofer. Rating: NN DVD package: n/a Rating: NN

The cover blurb says, “Follow The Money… If You Can,” but you won’t learn much connecting the dots that director Erwin Wagenhofer lays out in his well-meaning but woefully vague documentary.

An Austrian academic talks about the Mont Pelerin Society, economics thinkers who met in 1947 with the intention of forming a network to influence politics. We’re told that MPS members advised Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher. Who were they? What were their views, their impact? We’re not told.

We can infer it later on, when economist John Christensen lays out the platform adopted by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund in the 1970s. What are these organizations? We’re not told. Later, self-described “economic hit man” John Preston describes how the World Bank operates. Again, we get no details.

Neo-con opponents (called neo-liberals in the movie) and proponents fill in other pieces, but always with bald assertion. No details, no corroboration.

A commentary could have helped a lot. There isn’t one.

EXTRAS Widescreen. English audio. English, French subtitles.
