Meet Bill (Maple, 2007) D: Bernie Goldmann, Melisa Wallack, w/ Aaron Eckhart, Jessica Alba. Rating: NN DVD package: n/a
About 50 minutes in, 27-year-old Jessica Alba, playing approximately her age, has a 15-year-old boy (17-year-old Logan Lerman) model sexy lingerie for her. It’s a deeply twisted scene, probably illegal on Canadian screens and utterly out of place in a spiritless, unfunny comedy about a downtrodden guy who gets out from under.
As Bill, married to a cheating wife and working for his tyrannical father-in-law, Aaron Eckhart exudes an acceptable level of charm. Ditto Elizabeth Banks, the wife Lerman, the worldly kid Bill is mentoring and Alba, the sales clerk brought in to make the wife jealous. Trouble is, they don’t have nearly enough to do.
Co-directors Bernie Goldmann and Melisa Wallack deliver a flat movie that keeps repeating its few, simple points and spends half its time on the set-up. The gags are sparse and undeveloped. The pace is leaden and the visuals like TV.
