Meet Bill (Maple, 2007) D: Bernie Goldmann, Melisa Wallack, w/ Aaron Eckhart, Jessica Alba. Rating: NN; DVD package: n/a
About 50 minutes in, 27-year-old Jessica Alba, playing approximately her age, has a 15-year-old boy (17-year-old Logan Lerman) model sexy lingerie for her. It's a deeply twisted scene, probably illegal on Canadian screens and utterly out of place in a spiritless, unfunny comedy about a downtrodden guy who gets out from under.
As Bill, married to a cheating wife and working for his tyrannical father-in-law, Aaron Eckhart exudes an acceptable level of charm. Ditto Elizabeth Banks, the wife; Lerman, the worldly kid Bill is mentoring; and Alba, the sales clerk brought in to make the wife jealous. Trouble is, they don't have nearly enough to do.
Co-directors Bernie Goldmann and Melisa Wallack deliver a flat movie that keeps repeating its few, simple points and spends half its time on the set-up. The gags are sparse and undeveloped. The pace is leaden and the visuals like TV.
