THE BIG LEBOWSKI (Joel Coen, 1998) is one of the Coen brothers’ most underrated films. It opened to lukewarm critical reaction, and some viewers didn’t see the appeal of a hippie bowler named the The Dude (Jeff Bridges) who, along with his Vietnam vet pal Walter (John Goodman), gets sucked into an elaborate kidnapping plan involving a performance artist (Julianne Moore), neo-Nazis and a guy in an iron lung. Yet this scattershot, mixed-up film noir gets funnier with each viewing, and it dawns on you just how good a performance Bridges gives as the laid-back, ethical loser. He’s surrounded by a hilarious supporting cast, including Goodman, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro and Philip Seymour Hoffman. NNNN (September 18-19, Royal)
