Our picks for the best new movies and TV shows coming to Disney+ Canada in August 2021.
Marvel’s What If
If Patton Oswalt’s M.O.D.O.K series left you wondering what else might be possible with Marvel characters and animation, wonder no more: this new show takes its premise from the non-canonical series where an alien called Uatu The Watcher offers glimpses of alternate timelines for beloved characters. What if Killmonger happened to be in the area to save Tony Stark from the injury that led to the creation of Iron Man? What if Peggy Carter had taken the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers? What if Prince T’Challa joined the Guardians Of The Galaxy instead of Peter Quill? What if Marvel Zombies? (Look it up, it’s a thing.) Jeffrey Wright speaks for Uatu, and a dozen or so MCU stars return to voice their characters – including Chadwick Boseman, who recorded his final performance as T’Challa before his death last year. Vacation Friends
It’s a tale as old as time: a perfectly normal couple (Lil Rel Howery, Insecure’s Yvonne Orji) go to a Mexican resort to get away from the stress of planning their wedding, meet a couple of party animals (John Cena, Palm Springs’ Meredith Hagner) and have a total blowout with them… only to have their new pals follow them home and threaten to turn their nuptials into a nightmare. Director/co-writer Clay Tarver wrote the Paul Walker thriller Joy Ride before switching to comedy as a writer on Silicon Valley, so there’s a slight possibility this all ends in a bloodbath. But just a slight one. August 27
American Horror Stories
If you enjoyed watching the FX series American Horror Story push the boundaries of cable, coherence and camp but didn’t have the patience to sit through Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s season-long stories, this bite-sized spinoff offers more compressed carnage, with narratives limited to one or two episodes. And yes, they’ll definitely be pulling inspiration from the other show: the first two episodes tell the story of a certain haunted house, and a certain rubber suit. None of this is going to end well, is it. August 25
Only Murders In The Building
Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez star in this 10-part comedy series – created by Martin and producer John Hoffman, with a pilot directed by Jamie Babbit – about three people who start a true-crime podcast to investigate a mysterious death in their luxe Manhattan apartment building… only to discover the building has a history of such incidents. Is there a killer in their midst? Is the killer’s unit rent-controlled? And if so, what’s the square footage? We admit it: this one had us at “Steve Martin and Martin Short show with murder in it.” August 31
