Mothers And Daughters’ lives are a mess and so is this pic

MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS (Paul Duddridge ). 92 minutes. Opens Friday (May 6). See listing. Rating: NN

Here’s one of those multi-narrative pics where big stars appear in way too many unconnected stories, creating a very unsatisfying experience.

Snob-noxious Nina (Sharon Stone) is fighting with her daughter Layla (Alexandra Daniels) over how she’s wasting her life. Haute couture bra designer Georgina (Mira Sorvino) is harbouring an old secret. Becca (Christina Ricci) is furious with mom Beth (Courteney Cox) after she learns about the true circumstances of her birth (so confusing you may not totally get it). Gayle (Eva Amurri Martino) is mad at her mother, Millie (Susan Sarandon), for rejecting her boyfriend.

The glue here – sort of – is photographer Rigby (Selma Blair), who’s single and trying to figure out whether to keep her baby or pursue her career.

Director Paul Duddridge gives us just glimpses of these stories (Sarandon seems literally to have Skyped in her brief performance), and the narratives either resolve too easily or peter out. A peripheral piece about a pop star and his mother comes out of nowhere.

And, seriously, how in 2016 can anyone make a movie like this with only lily-white characters?
