THE NEWSWORLD DOCUMENTARY FILM FESTIVAL is a travelling road show that kicks off here in T.O. at Ryerson University and then tours nine Canadian cities. Tonight’s (Thursday, January 31) screening, Falling From The Sky, is director Matt Gallagher’s compelling study of Vietnamese orphan Heather MacDonald. She was adopted by a Canadian family after surviving a plane crash in 1975, and makes an emotional return to her native land and the site of the accident. Mark Johnston’s Blood, Smoke And Tears (Friday, February 1) takes the director back to his hometown in tobacco country, where he gently confronts his mother over her lifelong smoking habit while bonding with his tobacco-farming friend. It’s a folksy film, and you can’t help but cheer on Johnston’s mom’s efforts to butt out. My Left Breast (Saturday, February 2) is Gerry Rogers’s emotional and surprisingly funny film about her battle, alongside her lover Peg, with breast cancer. The filmmakers will be present for Q&A sessions following the screenings. NNN (See listings, for schedule).
