Reel Highlight

Rating: NNNN

The Get Reel Black Film Festival is in its fourth year, and the current slate of shorts and feats is strong, anchored by a tribute to Hollywood director Charles Burnett, who in 1994 came out with this under-appreciated police story. Michael Boatman stars as a the first black cop assigned to the L.A. County sheriff’s substation. Besides dealing with racism, he brings to light a police cover-up. Burnett handles the convoluted plotting with grace, and the whole film moves with the understated elegance that is his trademark. (April 27, noon, and April 28, 4 pm, Cumberland)
