WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE? (1962, Robert Aldrich Rating: NNNN
Rating: NNNNN
Bette Davis and Joan Crawford star in one of the most outlandish and successful comeback pictures ever produced. Once Hollywood’s biggest stars, Davis and Crawford had been reduced to TV guest appearances and hawking soda. But writer/director Aldrich saw the promise in casting the aging screen dames as reclusive sisters Jane (Davis), the unbalanced has-been ingenue, and Blanche (Crawford), the wheelchair bound movie star who blames Jane for the accident that crippled her. Together in their Hollywood mansion, the grotesque pair torture one another until a twist-filled finale in what really is camp at its finest. Don’t dismiss the over-the-top theatrics — Davis earned her 10th Oscar nomination for this performance. (August 28, Revue)
