Theres Always Room For Giallo

Yes, the Toronto International Film Festival is still chugging along through Sunday and check back here Sunday evening for a report on how the TIFF 2015 awards shake out. (Im hearing Spotlight is a favourite for this years Peoples Choice, but given how many people were buzzing about The Martian earlier in the festival I wouldnt totally count that out either.)

If youd rather avoid the red-carpet chaos but still want a little referred festival buzz, perhaps consider catching one of last years Midnight Madness titles, The Editor, at the Carlton Cinemas this weekend. Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy have crafted a delirious salute to the vivid, insane Italian horror genre known as giallo and if you cant tell Mario Bava from your Lucio Fulci, the Carlton Midnight Society can help you out with that.

Tomorrow night (Saturday, September 19), the Society will be presenting a special giallo double bill, pairing The Editor with one of the films to which it pays such loving tribute: Dario Argentos 1975 Deep Red, a gonzo thriller starring David Hemmings as a pianist stalked by an infernally inventive serial killer. But the premise is really just an excuse for a string of overheated set pieces set to a pulsing musical score by Italian rockers Goblin.

The fun starts at 7 pm with Deep Red, and continues at 9:30 pm with The Editor. For more information, check out the Facebook page. And if this sounds even slightly like something you might want to see, just go. Trust me.

Rather see something less gruesome? Theres always this months NOW Free Flick at the Royal and this month, were saluting the 80s with John Hughess Ferris Buellers Day Off at 7:30 pm on Monday (September 21). Doors open at 6:30 pm and as always, the first 100 guests get popcorn and a drink on us. Ill be there to introduce the movie. Come say hello!
