What we can’t wait to watch
We Are Who We Are
What’s it like being an Gen Z American teen in Europe? Initially selected to screen in the Directors’ Fortnight program at Cannes, Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino’s eight-part miniseries is a coming-of-age drama follows two teens (Jordan Kristine Seamon and Jack Dylan Grazer) who live on a U.S. military base in Italy. The director is known for picturesque locations and cult casting and, judging from the trailer, he’s set to deliver on both scores: Chloë Sevigny and Alice Braga play a lesbian army couple and rapper/singer/songwriter Kid Cudi plays an army dad. September 14
Raised By Wolves
In this new HBO Max series, a catastrophic war has reduced Earth to a husk. Two androids (Amanda Collin, Abubakar Salim) are charged with rearing human children on another world, far from the conflict. But things aren’t exactly peaceful here, either. Creator Aaron Guzikowski wrote Denis Villeneuve’s super-intense Prisoners and that recent remake of Papillon, so we’re curious to see how his grimy, ground-level vision translates to the sci-fi genre. And Ridley Scott – who knows a little something about artificial life forms – directed the first two episodes, so it’ll be eerie, beautiful and expensive. September 3
The Third Day
HBO’s limited series – the first two episodes of which will have a midnight drive-in premiere at TIFF in advance of its small-screen bow – is an experimental drama from Felix Barrett (whose theatre company Punchdrunk created the immersive experience Sleep No More) and Dennis Kelly (Utopia) about a small British island that offers redemption to broken people – if the inhabitants find them worthy. Jude Law and Naomie Harris are the latest arrivals; Emily Watson, Katherine Waterston and Paddy Considine co-star as islanders with their own very specific agenda. Just keep your eyes peeled for any large wicker men. September 14
Unpregnant
In this film from Valley Girl remake director Rachel Lee Goldenberg, Haley Lu Richardson (who was so great in Support The Girls and Columbus) plays a pregnant teen who heads out on a road trip with her ex-bestie (Euphoria’s Barbie Ferreira) to get an abortion. It sounds like the comedy version of Never Rarely Sometimes Always – one of the year’s most acclaimed dramas – but it’s actually based on a YA novel of the same name. Road trip comedies are a dime a dozen, but we’ll be anticipating the chemistry between Unpregnant’s rising leads. September 10

Coastal Elites
The pandemic is of course changing how we make art. This Paul Rudnick-scripted HBO film is one of the first physically-distanced films to appear. Bette Midler, Sarah Paulson, Kaitlyn Dever, Issa Rae and Canada’s own Dan Levy play characters who are breaking down as they try to deal with politics, culture and a deadly health crisis. Ya know, like all of us. Jay Roach (Bombshell) directs what is sure to be essential viewing – election year or not. September 12
The Comey Rule
Showtime’s adaptation of James Comey’s book A Higher Loyalty stars Jeff Daniels as the former FBI director and Brendan Gleeson as Donald J. Trump, the president who demanded his loyalty – and fired him when he refused to provide it. Will their standoff be depicted as the battle for America’s soul (as Comey saw it), or just the latest television project where actors bury themselves in latex and bad wigs to caricature public figures? Writer/director Billy Ray turned questions of ethics and national security into riveting drama in Shattered Glass and Breach, so we’re hoping for good things here. September 27
Solid bets
A Hidden Life
Having followed his masterful The Tree Of Life with nearly a decade of self-indulgent experiments, Terrence Malick found something more to say with this majestic consideration of faith and compassion. It’s set during WWII but very much tied to the here and now, telling the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who refused to fight in Hitler’s army and suffered terribly for his stance, Malick explores what it is to be a principled man in a world that cannot abide them. It’s a powerful allegory for the present moment, and a shattering spiritual experience thanks to both Malick’s compassionate eye and August Diehl’s remarkable, measured performance. It’s three hours long. You won’t feel it. September 18
Sailor Moon (seasons 1-5)
The world is a dumpster fire, so no wonder demand for animé – where good triumphs and evil is vanquished – is so high. The internet basically broke when Avatar: The Last Airbender hit another streaming platform earlier this summer. And now comes the return of the campy series about an empowered schoolgirl, her impossibly leggy friends, various conniving monsters and the always-out-of-reach romantic interest Tuxedo Mask.
